New Cell Phone Designs for Seniors

As we had shown in a previous article on senior cell phones, there are some great cell phones out there for older people. The ones in this article are not reality yet (they are concept phones), but we hope to see them (and others like them) very soon.

The FIT Wireless Phone

This concept phone, designed by Jongmu Lee, looks like a high-end touchscreen phone, but was designed with seniors in mind. You can change the size of the numbers on the screen for easy dialing, comes with a scroll that lets you easily move up/down the menus, tilt scrolling and touch-dialing using images instead of numbers.

Lazy Thumbs Cell Phone

For anyone who ever wished cell phones didn’t have those tiny keys, this one has only three. This voice-activated phone provides calling and text messaging features, with text messages sent by transcribing text-to-speech. Polycarbonate plates house OLED screens and completed with a small LCD underneath.

Created by designer Jeong-Kyun Nam, this phone looks to simplify cell phone use through the use of ‘badges’ for dialing. Essentially, you place the badge (disk) of the person you want to call on the dot and it calls them. Especially designed for people who have reduced vision.

Easy Mobile Calling Cell Phone

EMC (easy mobile calling) cell phone concept Matthias Pinkert specifically designed with Baby Boomers in mind. Featuring four large keys, this phone offers one-touch calling and an emergency key. It has tracking via GPS integrated and comes with a lanyard so it isn’t easily lost. It is missing some of the functionality offered in conventional cell phones, but it’s simplistic usage should attract many.

The ‘Unportable’ Cell Phone

Developed by the Czech company Jablotron, this phone doesn’t look like any cell phone you’ve ever seen. In reality, this phone is a desktop cell phone and is designed for seniors who may have trouble with smaller numbers. The Grand model pictured features an illuminated key pad and a full keypad for text messages. It would utilize cell service instead of land-lines.

Picture Frame Phone

Not a cell phone, but still has application for those who are looking for an easy-to-use interface that is senior friendly. This concept phone designed by Tao Ma functions as both phone and a digital picture frame. Upon receiving a call, the phone can display the photo of the person calling. If you missed a call, the person’s photo shows and you can touch the screen to dial them back.
