Elderly activities keep the mind and body healthier as we grow older
It’s no secret that keeping the mind healthy is important to those aging in place. Elderly people need mental stimulation just like everyone else; keeping it exercised is easier than you might think. In any given community, there are hundreds of educational opportunities for the elderly every month. It doesn’t matter how big your city is, they are around every corner. You just have to think outside of the box a little.
Elderly activities ideas
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Take a ballroom dance class
- Take a senior self defense class
- Attend a demonstration or class on American Sign Language
- Take no-credit courses on language, geography or technology from a community college
- Attend a women’s / men’s issue program at a hospital or clinic
- Visit a informational session at a church or temple you are not familiar with
- Attend a talk given at a school or church that is of interest
- Visit the Humane Society
Many of these activities may not seem too intriguing, but keep in mind the goal is to keep your loved one learning and stimulated. Look into community centers, local churches (mosques, temples, etc.), community organizations, hospitals and colleges. You will be surprised how many of these you can participate in for cheap (or free). Why not make it a family learning event?
