This incredible new piece of equipment could help physicians discover problems with balance before a fall actually happens. The model the MIT Team is working with now is geared towards merely identifying a balance problem. In the future, the technology could be used to actually correct balance problems by providing an indicator to the wearer if they become unbalanced.
According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, almost 300,000 Americans fell and had a hip fracture as a result in 2005. According to falls statistics, over 50% of fatal falls are among people 75 or older.
