Robots for those aging in place

As futuristic as it sounds, scientists have taken proven robotic technology and put it to use in caring for elderly people aging in place.

The robot, dubbed uBOT-5, can perform a wide array of tasks, including:

  • Recognize someone walking or sitting
  • Recognize a fall and contact medical personnel
  • Act as a two-way communication device (audio and video)
  • Dial 911 and check limited vital signs

Practical applications would include a family member, caregiver or doctor being able to access the unit remotely, wander the house looking for the person and video conference with them.
