As futuristic as it sounds, scientists have taken proven robotic technology and put it to use in caring for elderly people aging in place.
The robot, dubbed uBOT-5, can perform a wide array of tasks, including:
- Recognize someone walking or sitting
- Recognize a fall and contact medical personnel
- Act as a two-way communication device (audio and video)
- Dial 911 and check limited vital signs
Practical applications would include a family member, caregiver or doctor being able to access the unit remotely, wander the house looking for the person and video conference with them.
