This is showcase is for a whole house Universal Design remodeling project.
Bob and Robin needed a home with enough property to raise Robin’s horses and to accommodate Bob’s wheelchair. They found the perfect plot of land, however the 1940s era home was inaccessible to the wheelchair.
Doorways and hallways were narrow, corners were sharp, bathrooms were tiny, and the kitchen needed a complete renovation. Before they could even move into the house, they hired MARK IV Builders to apply universal design principles in a way that the home would appear contemporary and not institutional.
The entire Universal Design remodeling project, 2200 square feet, was completed in just 18 weeks.
Aging In Place Features
The first thing we did was to install scissor trusses to eliminate the need for interior bearing walls. We eliminated the need for some doorways and widened the ones that remained. We also widened all passageways and constructed ramps to eliminate steps.
We lowered all the kitchen counters to 34 inches to make them accessible from a seated position and rounded all the corners. Our team installed hardwood floors throughout the single-level home. To give Bob plenty of room to maneuver, we widened the bathroom doorway. Rounded corners, lowered towel hooks, and a spacious zero-entry shower with a bench and wand faucet create a space Bob can use independently.
Bob’s home office was built for his easy use. The under-desk leg clearance was designed to fit his wheelchair. Low-level bookshelves beneath the windows are within reach from a seated position. Even windows were lowered to provide a full view of the beautiful property.
Outside of the home we constructed ramps and decking so that Bob can enjoy independent access. Details like see through deck railings do not impede his views to the park-like setting.
