An external or internal vertical platform lift in your High Point home can increase safety and ease of access
A vertical platform lift (VPL), also known as a porch lift, is a great way to increase your ease and safety at home if you use a power chair, scooter or wheelchair to get into your home in High Point.
Typically, they are installed outside to help provide easier access to an elevated entrance of a home. However, it doesn’t have to go on the outside of your home (more on this later). This relieves the burden of someone aging in place having to navigate up stairs to a porch or deck safely.
Common vertical platform lift features
- Automatic folding ramp
- Easy controls
- Emergency stop button
- Quiet operation
- Weather-resistant finish and controls
- Built-in safety sensors
- AC and DC (battery) power
How it works
The most basic vertical platform has an open platform and a powered lifting mechanism that can move up and down. Typically, these models utilize a screw drive system.
Nearly every dealer or installer in the High Point, NC area sells a system like this.
Other VPL models
In addition to the basic porch lift, you can find vertical platform lifts that have more advanced features, including ones specific to particular situations.
For instance, a VPL could have the following features:
- a manufacturer-built enclosure in metal, with metal or acrylic panels,
- Features and materials for use indoors or in an enclosure
- Specific models for indoor use
Vertical platform lift installation
Since these lifts are used to adapt a home for people, there are important safety guidelines that must be followed. Due to that, most municipalities have specific codes that apply to their installation. High Point is not an exception (at minimum in the State of North Carolina Building Codes).
The most important thing you should do after choosing a quality lift is to find a licensed, insured and experienced installer. Most brand name manufacturers will have a network of factory trained installation professionals. Or, they can help you find one in your community.
An Occupational Therapist, home Remodeler or other certified professional who provides home assessments and modifications will be able to help you decide if a vertical platform lift is right for you. And, which model would best suit your needs.
Whether they are able to or not, when you do find an installer, be sure to check their credentials, verify training from the manufacturer, verify licensing and insurance. Then, check references.
Your safety will rest upon their ability to install the lift properly.
