Universal Design Kitchen for Active Adult Living: Kerrie Kelly Design Lab

October 31, 2011 By Mark Hager

This universal design kitchen project was for a Del Webb community in Sun City, Lincoln Hills, Ca. The goal was to create a universal design kitchen without having it look like it aesthetically, but rather beautifully functional. It was built with an active adult lifestyle in mind.

Knobs were added to the cabinetry and lever handles to the pantry. This universal design kitchen was originally designed, with a single oven in a range-type location. Layered lighting was installed overhead (general can lights, accent lighting for island pendants and task lighting under cabinets). The island size allows for wheelchairs and does not obstruct traffic patterns. There are also no overhangs in this universal design kitchen.

This universal design kitchen project cost around $30,000, which included the universal amenities mentioned above. click image for larger size
